The end result - steel tube milled for a slip-jointI was sick with the flu and out of town twice this month so spent less than 10 hours working on the table this month, but it is progressing along… As I said in my last post I bought two thicknesses of steel tube – the plan is to mill part of the thicker one so that the thinner one will slide over it creating a slip-joint.  It would probably be easier to mill the pieces horizontally but then the edges wouldn’t be rounded and since the inside of the tube is slightly rounded it wouldn’t fit inside if it had a square edge.  Therefore I have to mill them vertically to get the rounded corner, and it just makes it more exciting!

Here are a few pics with the progress so far. I’m almost done with a post talking about how I’m using the CNC mill and hopefully it will help you understand the milling process. Plus there’s video which will help even more!

And it will explain the “oops” which happened on the second to left one…
