2010 – In With The New…
Jan 1
2009 saw the beginning of this project seemingly out of nowhere and I’m excited at what the coming year will bring.
Instead of the blog posts (as before) I’m going to try for more frequent updates and pics on the twitter feed. Of course the completed projects will still be posted here. Feedback has been great so far and I really appreciate it and hope you keep it coming!
There are a few ideas in the pipeline: various lighting projects, wood, metal, and vinyl decals to name a few – looking forward to getting them off the ground. But now it’s time to resume work on the dining table and see how it stacks up against the vision I have for it.
Stay tuned for what 2010 has in store!
You can see the actual post here, below is a screenshot from when it went up. Thanks Lifehacker!
Dining Table – part 3

5 more pieces milled… And here’s a picture of the slip-joint I mentioned last time. Read the rest of this entry »
I’ve been doing some more work on the table recently and decided to try out some video with the camera. As they say a picture may be worth a thousand words but sometimes a picture might prompt a ton of questions as well. When I say I’m milling something, what does that mean anyway? Have a look! Dining Table – part 2

I was sick with the flu and out of town twice this month so spent less than 10 hours working on the table this month, but it is progressing along… As I said in my last post I bought two thicknesses of steel tube – the plan is Read the rest of this entry »
Dining Table – part 1

It was a toss up what the next project would be but it came down to a dining table to replace our existing one. It’s going to be roughly the same size – about 8 or 9 feet long to seat 8 comfortably. The frame is going to be just steel, and the top is going to be just wood. This project should be much faster and cheaper than the desk – going to work on simple for a little while. A New Desk – complete!

Finally!
Actually it’s been done for too long to admit, but we were out of the country for awhile (getting inspiration for new projects!) and then just really busy and didn’t get to posting the final progress. It’s about time to start on a new project so figured we should put up the final desk pics. Here it is! Read the rest of this entry »

I did not forget about the desk for a month… There have been many weekends away and busy at home but it has been progressing a few hours at a time here and there! As a matter of fact it has finally come home from Club Workshop! But first let’s get up to speed since the last update. Read the rest of this entry »
A New Desk – part 5

Haven’t posted an update for a little while but that doesn’t mean I haven’t been working! This whole project has taken more time that I expected – that has been a learning experience in itself! Funny how the Part 3 post says “Finally it’s starting to come together”! So what have I been doing? Read the rest of this entry »

Building the frame for the desk defined most of the shape but there is a lot more to do. Read the rest of this entry »
A New Desk – part 3

Finally it’s all starting to come together. along with the 2″ x 3″ x 3/16″ steel angle from before I cut up some 1.5″ x 1.5″ x 1/8″ as well. I made up a little jig for both the 1/8″ and 3/16″ corners to keep them lined up just right while welding them – made it so much easier. Was a little bit worried about how to weld them all up as cleanly as possible. For now the plan is to keep the finished desk in a raw state so I can’t just weld away and grind the welds down as one often does. Read the rest of this entry »
